ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΚΑ ΜΟΥΣΕΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΣΥΓΧΡΟΝΗ ΤΕΧΝΗ – ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUMS AND CONTEMPORARY ART

Ο Γιώργος  Ξένος στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο

 Η σχέση του εικαστικού Γιώργου Ξένου με τα αρχαιολογικά μουσεία είναι γνωστή. Ακολουθώντας ένα μεστό δρόμο παιδείας και πολιτισμού ο Γιώργος Ξένος ορθώνει με το έργο του μια πνευματική παραγωγή που συνδέει με σπάνια καθαρότητα την τέχνη του με την αρχαιότητα και τη μετουσιώνει σε δυνατό μήνυμα στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία. Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι με αφορμή την επέτειο για  τα 200 χρόνια από την κήρυξη της επανάστασης του 1821, οι «Διερχόμενοι» του Γιώργου Ξένου φιλοξενούνται στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος, αναδεικνύοντας  τις ηρωικές μορφές των αγωνιστών του 1821 και υπαινισσόμενοι ταυτόχρονα τους καθημερινούς ήρωες της εποχής μας.

Στο Επιγραφικό Μουσείο

Είχα τη χαρά να δεχτώ ως διευθύντρια του Επιγραφικού Μουσείου τους πρώτους «Διερχόμενους»  του Γιώργου Ξένου, οι οποίοι  παρουσιάστηκαν  το 2011 στην ατομική του έκθεση με τίτλο «Ο ίσκιος του ανθρώπου είναι ο πολιτισμός του». Τα έργα που εκτέθηκαν τότε στο Επιγραφικό Μουσείο πραγματεύτηκαν το ίχνος, την εικόνα, τη γραφή
και τον ανθρώπινο πολιτισμό σε ουσιαστικό διάλογο με τις αρχαίες επιγραφές.

Οι “Διερχόμενοι”  πρεσβευτές

Ο δημιουργικός διάλογος του Γιώργου Ξένου με την αρχαία τέχνη συνεχίστηκε  έκτοτε σε διάφορα μουσεία. Το  2016,  οι  «Διερχόμενοι»  εκτέθηκαν στους αναβαθμούς   και  το περιστύλιο του Εθνικού  Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου,  στο πλαίσιο του εορτασμού για τα 150 χρόνια από τη θεμελίωση του εμβληματικού κτηρίου  του Μουσείου. Λιτοί και ταυτόχρονα μνημειακοί οι «Διερχόμενοι» στήθηκαν μπροστά στο μουσείο συμβολίζοντας τους διερχόμενους επισκέπτες από όλα τα μέρη του πλανήτη,  ως πρεσβευτές διάδοσης του αρχαίου ελληνικού πολιτισμού.

Οι «Τριήρεις» στις «Οδύσσειες»

Η πυκνή, σημειολογική γραφή του Γιώργου Ξένου στη σειρά  «Τριήρεις» χρησιμοποιήθηκε την ίδια χρονιά με μεγάλη επιτυχία και ως λογότυπο της έκθεσης «Οδύσσειες». Σε άμεση ταύτιση με τη θεματική της  θάλασσας, οι αρχετυπικές «Τριήρεις» του Γιώργου Ξένου μετέφεραν στο διεθνές κοινό  της έκθεσης ένα λιτό, εύληπτο και δυνατό μήνυμα.

Η συνεργασία του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου με σύγχρονους εικαστικούς συνεχίζεται  για πολλά χρόνια σηματοδοτώντας την επιθυμία του πρώτου μουσείου της χώρας να αφουγκράζεται την κοινωνία και την  εποχή του.

George Xenos at the National Archaeological Museum

The relationship of the artist George Xenos with archaeological museums is well known. Following a mature path of education and culture, George Xenos erects with his work a spiritual production that connects with rare purity his art with antiquity and transmutes it into a strong message in modern society. It is no coincidence that on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the revolution of 1821, the “Passers-by” of George Xenos are hosted at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), highlighting the heroic figures of the fighters of 1821 and at the same time alluding to the everyday heroes of our time.

At the Epigraphic Museum

I had the pleasure to receive as Director of the Epigraphic Museum the first “Passers-by” of George Xenos, who were presented in 2011 in his solo exhibition entitled “A Person’s Shadow is Their Culture“. The works exhibited at the Epigraphic Museum then dealt with the trace, the image, the writing and the human culture in a substantial dialogue with the ancient inscriptions.

 

At the National Archaeological Museum

The creative dialogue of George Xenos with ancient art has continued since then in various museums. In 2016, the “Passers-by” were exhibited in the steps and peristyle of the National Archaeological Museum, as part of the celebration for the 150th anniversary from the laying of the foundations of the emblematic building of the museum. Simple and at the same time monumental, the “Passers-by” were erected in front of the museum, symbolizing the passing visitors from all over the world, as ambassadors of the dissemination of the ancient Greek culture.

 

The dense, semiotic writing of George Xenos in the series “Triremes” was used with great success the same year as a logo for the exhibition “Odysseys”. In direct identification with the theme of the sea, the archetypal “Triremes” of George Xenos conveyed to the international audience of the exhibition a simple, intelligible and strong message.

The collaboration of the National Archaeological Museum with contemporary artists continues for many years, signalling the desire of the first museum in the country to listen to society and to its era.
